Brand Mission: The Foundation of Your Brand Story

Every great story begins with a quest worth believing in.

So does every great brand.

This is Episode 2 of Frame Your Story: The Storyteller’s Approach to Brand Building – a nine-episode series from Synergetic Media applying Hollywood narrative principles to business brand building. Each episode covers one building block of a complete brand story framework. Episode 2 begins the brand framework with the essential foundation – your brand mission.

What Is a Brand Mission?

A brand mission statement is the reason a business exists, the higher purpose that it came into being. It is not the same as a tagline, though your tagline may come out of it.

Consider a good film. Every protagonist in a good story tells a tale larger than what is on the surface. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker isn’t just delivering a droid; he’s restoring balance to the galaxy.

Consider Nike. Nike’s mission isn’t selling shoes. It’s “to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.” What’s missing from that sentence? Any mention of shoes, or sneakers. What’s there instead is a stake in something big, noble, and aspirational. Nike’s mission isn’t just to inspire atheletes, it is to inspire every athelete in the world. Dream big! It reminds me of the saying “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”

Most brand messaging makes the same mistake that weak scripts make. They haven’t built the story on something more meaningful. The solution to this – same as with any good story – is to first define your mission, your quest, your noble “reason for doing.”

Why doesn’t every business have a brand mission written down?

Most businesses can tell you what they sell in one sentence. Fewer can tell you why it matters beyond the transaction, and fewer still have written that reason down anywhere a customer will see it. The result is marketing that reads like a spec sheet. Accurate, forgettable, replaceable by any competitor with the same spec sheet.

No mission = no apparent goal = no brand story. Then you are in danger of just selling stuff or doing stuff.

Mission provides meaning.

How to Find Your Brand Mission

A mission gets excavated, usually by asking why the work mattered before it ever became a business. Get that answer down and it becomes the foundation for the rest of the story. Skip it, and no amount of clever copy will make up the difference.

If your business hasn’t clearly defined its brand mission statement yet, it’s the first gap to close, before the logo, before the tagline, before the ad spend.

If your business is running, the mission is already there. The work is putting it into words other people can see. Most business owners, when they dig deep, DO in fact know the bigger reason they do what they do. The task is to get this written down in one or two succinct lines, that can be easily communicated to customers and employees alike. That task is simple, but not easy.

Your Mission already exists. You just need to uncover it and define it.

Writing your mission down is what makes it shareable. That’s the whole point of putting it on a wall, in an onboarding packet, on the About page. Employees can see it and get behind it. Customers can see it and connect with it.

TurningPoint and the Pink Affair Videos

TurningPoint, now Iris Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, has one of the clearest missions I’ve worked with. It rallies three separate audiences at once: the staff who deliver the care, the patients who receive it, and the donors who fund it. Some of my favorite videos I have made are the ones Synergetic Media produced for TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation – now rebranded to Iris Breast Cancer Rehabilitation – year after year built entirely around capturing that mission. Due to the heart in those videos, heart we only captured not created, they went on to be recognized by several awards including Viddy platinum and a prestigious Webby Honoree Award.

The videos played at the yearly Pink Affair gala, which is the organization’s largest and most significant yearly fundraiser. The videos were timed to play immediately before the call to donate, so the room was emotionally connected to the mission at the precise moment it mattered most to a charity – when giving was on the table. Giving which makes their work possible. A single Pink Affair would typically generate well over six figures. The mission was doing the work. The video just made sure everyone in the room could see it, and even more importantly, feel it.

Mission connects us on an emotional level.
